About the Homerton Hospital Postcards

Patients in the the Regional Neurological Rehabilitation Unit (RNRU) at Homerton Hospital have been busy creating their own special postcards for this project which celebrates a collaboration between the Trust and CoolTan Arts.

For A postcard to the world, many hospital staff responded to a request to send their unwanted postcards to the art project. Hundreds of cards have been donated and an entire collection of vintage postcards dating from c.1900 to 1950 has also been gifted. Patients have been sifting through  cards and hand colouring them with inks, adding elaborate collage elements and typography – transforming them into beautiful contemporary works of art. Each week, Shaun Caton, Art Curator, selects a batch and sends them through the mail to CoolTan Arts, whose members have been adding their artistic touch to each and every card.

Shaun commented: ‘There is something special about sending and receiving a postcard, which is both a souvenir of a journey and a memory. This is a collaboration in which many people have been involved not just in sourcing the post cards for patients to use, but also in sending them to another organization in London for their inventive involvement and active participation. The results will be exciting and we wonder each week what CoolTan Arts will do with our half of the cards.’
